Want to make your workplace & team a safe place to be? Start by expanding your own sense of safety.

Most decent, well-intentioned people (that includes you who are reading this!) want their teammates to be happy, healthy & fulfilled at work. They want their coworkers to feel like their points of view are valued & that they belong. They want all the benefits that a psychologically safe team can offer - such as more innovation, more productive disruption, more creativity.

And: how you treat yourself might prevent you from being able to fully do this.

Think about it… if you want your workplace to be a haven of psychological safety, that means that you don't punish or reject people for taking risks.

Well - what kind of risks are YOU willing to tolerate, just for yourself?

Do you tolerate certain small mistakes, but other ones ignite a storm inside of you, where it’s hard to concentrate on work because your mind just won’t shut up?

Do you beat up on yourself for doing something outside of the “approved courses of action” or team norm, especially if it doesn’t work out the way that you expected?

Do you carefully select pilot projects or beta tests in your line of work according to what will best be received by others, ignoring what your inner wisdom and expertise is leading you towards?

Wherever you’re not able to extend safety for risk-taking for yourself will reveal your limits in how much psychological safety you’ll be able to create for your coworkers or your team.

If you don’t know how to have your own back under any circumstance, and turn it all into learning – this is your growth edge.

See yourself in this? (Who wouldn’t? This is very human!) Share your perspective in the comments below.

And, if you’d like to build the ability to find safety in any circumstance, coaching is a space to build this muscle.
