Shifting perspective on Procrastination and Resistance
This is my (what should be a) weekly reminder for people who identify as high achievers, overachievers, perfectionists– people who have been conditioned to strive for greatness in their life:
Procrastination and resistance are DEFENSE MECHANISMS.
They're there for really good reasons. They're alive inside of you because they're trying to shield you from being manipulated.
If you identify with any of the aforementioned descriptors, I’m guessing you may have grown up in an environment where your worthiness was determined by the external attention that you received, and the social currency in your family or your community was high achievement.
You were expected to get excellent grades, participate in all the extracurricular activities, and you were held to extremely high standards from middle school, high school post-grad and beyond– with little to no regard for your somatic, emotional and relational needs.
Procrastination and resistance are trying to shield the BEING inside of you that actually doesn't want to perform. They’re afraid that performing will require you to abandon your needs again.
What would change about how you relate to your procrastination / resistance if you truly knew that they were trying to help you?
